You cannot turn on the TV today without being bombarded with ads highlighting quick, inexpensive meals designed for families on the go. Unfortunately, many times we have to trade well-balanced nutrition at the expense of time.
No matter how busy they may be (from medical student to teacher to engineer to SAHM) ALL parents want to make sure that their kids have a well-balanced diet, so that they have the energy they need to succeed. (Speaking of which, MyPyramid has some great nutritional resources for instilling healthy eating values in our families...)
The good people at the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" campaign are on a mission to raise awareness that many children (and American's in general) are under-consuming their suggested daily value of protein.
Did you know?
- More than 80 percent of children between the ages of 2-11 are not eating the recommended servings from the Meat and Beans group meaning they are at a greater risk at developing nutritional deficiencies (such as low iron, zinc, B6, and B12 vitamins).
- Calorie-for-calorie, beef is one of the most naturally nutrient-rich foods. A 3-ounce serving of lean beef contributes less than 10 percent of calories to a 2,000 calorie diet, yet it supplies more than 10 percent of the Daily Value for 10 essential nutrients.
- Partnering beef with fruits and vegetables is a fantastic way to make sure that both you and your kids are receiving the best nutritional value from their meals while staying healthy.
So here's the fun part:
At at the end of the week, I will be giving away a prize pack to THREE of my readers filled with goodies such as:
- The Healthy Beef Cookbook: featuring over 130 lean beef recipes for every member of the family (cookbook holder included)
- An “I Heart Beef” apron
- An instant-read thermometer and "Cooking Temperatures for Beef" magnet
- An array of “I Heart Beef” balloons, stickers, and temporary tattoos (to keep the little ones entertained)
